Melissani Cave

Melissani Cave is a cenote-style cavern with a partially collapsed roof that lights up an underground brackish lake.

Rediscovered in 1951, the lake measures 160 meters long and up to 39 meters deep. The entry fee is 10 EUR for adults, which includes the mandatory 10 to 15-minute wooden rowboat tour. Swimming is strictly prohibited to preserve the water quality.

The bright blue colors are most visible under direct sunlight. Plan to visit between 11:30 and 14:00 from June to September for the optimal lighting conditions.

The main body of the lake sits directly beneath the open roof. Direct sunlight hits the water here, creating bright blue reflections. Try to sit near the front of the rowboat. This gives you clear, unobstructed views for photos.
