What time of day is best for Melissani Cave?

You should arrive between 11:30 and 14:00.

During this window, the sun is high directly above the cave. The sunlight beams through the collapsed roof and hits the lake surface. This causes the water to glow a brilliant turquoise color.

What causes the blue water in Melissani Cave?

Direct sunlight refracting through the deep, clear brackish water creates the bright blue effect.

The lake is up to 39 meters deep. The water travels 15 kilometers underground from the Katavothres sinkholes. When the midday sun hits this deep, clear water, it creates the glowing color.

Can I see Drogarati Cave on the same day?

Yes, Drogarati Cave is only 3 kilometers away.

You can buy a combo ticket for both caves for 13 EUR. Drogarati is 60 meters underground and stays at a constant 18 degrees Celsius (64F). Because Drogarati does not rely on sunlight, you can visit it before or after your midday Melissani tour.
